You know how sometimes, you meet someone and you just know you HAVE to be their friend. This happened to me five years (ish?) ago with my gal pal Meredith. We technically weren’t allowed to be friends because of work – how ridiculous is that – but, I have my priorities straight. We became friends and she ended up abandoning me and moved to Yellowknife. No hard feelings. She opened the cutest boutique called Mermaid & Moon. I obviously felt like Mermaid & Moon needed to sell some Flambette goodies (every store basically needs to…) and the time has come! Eeeeeek! I, of course, decided to ask Meredith a few questions so you can learn about Mermaid & Moon.
When I was in university I started making jewelry out of crystals as a creative outlet in between studying and working. It started out as a relaxing hobby for down-time but I really started to grow my passion for creating and began selling jewelry at local shops, farmers markets and on Etsy.
When I moved to Yellowknife, I was working full-time and didn’t have a lot of opportunity to create anymore. I felt unfulfilled in my work and when the opportunity came to start this adventure, I knew I had to take it. Family friends purchased the house the shop is in and asked if I would like to rent the space and run a shop. It was all new and overwhelming but also very exciting.
Over the past 3 years it has been an incredible journey of growth for both the business but also as myself as an artist. I started my education in graphic design and have been using those skills symbiotically with the business to advance my career and artistry.
My favourite product right now is the Oneka Cedar and Sage shampoo and conditioner supplied by YK Refinery. It smells so heavenly.
I love how unique Yellowknife is. There is such a vibrant community and people from all over the world. The arts community is also so special. There is so much talent and beauty here in the north, it is something truly spectacular. I miss the ocean and all of the cute coffee shops (and of course my beautiful friends <3) (She means me)
Connect with your favourite local small business and ask the owners lots of questions. I had no idea what I was doing when I started and I am always learning more everyday. Try not to be intimidated by all of the information out there. Starting a small business can be very hard but also very rewarding. I love being able to spend my days doing something I love.
I also suggest looking into grants that might be available in your area. There often are starter grants that might be able to help with whatever your project is!
So far my favourite is the Raspberry & Vanilla candle. I’m excited to try the soaps & bubble baths next.
Thank you, Meredith, for answering my questions! To discover Mermaid & Moon, check out their Instagram and their website. (P.S. their Instagram account has a picture of Meredith’s new pup and I just can’t.)
